The Louisiana
Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has extended the
oyster season in the Sister Lake Public Oyster Seed Reservation
until one-half hour after sunset on Jan. 31, 2006, except
for that portion of the lake that is west and north of a line
originating at 29 degrees 12 minutes 50.56 seconds north latitude
and 90 degrees 56 minutes 53.54 seconds west longitude thence
northeast to a position at 29 degrees 15 minutes 06.06 seconds
north latitude and 90 degrees 55 minutes 17.93 seconds west
longitude thence east northeast to a position terminating
at 29 degrees 15 minutes 20.89 seconds north latitude and
90 degrees 54 minutes 01.51 seconds west longitude.
In addition, the
2004 Sister Lake cultch plant located within the following
coordinates will remain open from one-half hour before sunrise
Jan. 13 to one-half hour after sunset on Jan. 15, 2006:
- 29 degrees
13 minutes 36.49 seconds north latitude
90 degrees 54 minutes 59.89 seconds west longitude
- 29 degrees 13
minutes 32.29 seconds north latitude
90 degrees 54 minutes 43.89 seconds west longitude
- 29 degrees 13
minutes 15.72 seconds north latitude
90 degrees 55 minutes 05.51 seconds west longitude
- 29 degrees 13
minutes 12.58 seconds north latitude
90 degrees 54 minutes 46.94 seconds west longitude
Despite hurricane
related impacts to the Sister Lake Public Oyster Seed Reservation
and the harvest of significant number of marketable oysters,
marketable quantities of oysters remain in these waters and
have been noted during recent biological sampling. This continuation
of harvesting activities within the areas to remain open should
help facilitate the removal of sediment overburden, thereby
re-exposing reefs and providing favorable habitat for future
oyster spat sets.
Maps of
the area in the Sister Lake Public Oyster Seed Reservation
to be extended are available at LDWF offices in Baton Rouge
and Bourg and may be downloaded and printed from the LDWF
Web site at www.wlf.louisiana.gov.
