Recreational
Pond Management Subject of Educational Sessions
Posted:
5/4/05
The LSU
AgCenter will hold an educational session on recreational
pond management from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. May 10 at sites
across the state.
Offered
through the LSU AgCenter’s distance education network,
the program will originate from Baton Rouge and will be available
at facilities in Lake Charles, Calhoun, Pollock, Alexandria,
Metairie, Bossier City, Rosepine, Winnsboro and Lake Providence.
LSU AgCenter
aquaculture specialist Dr. Greg Lutz said topics to be discussed
include design and construction of recreational ponds, habitat
development, water quality, turbidity control, fertilization
recommendations, liming procedures, stocking rates and combinations,
responding to fish kills, managing diseases and population
balance, weed identification and control and deterring predators
and pests
"The
number of small ponds in Louisiana has increased dramatically
as a result of housing construction patterns in suburban/rural
transition zones throughout the state," Lutz said. "Based
on input from LSU AgCenter field faculty, as of 2005, an estimated
90,000 to 120,000 recreational and farm ponds probably exist
within Louisiana, and those have a total of 30,000 to 40,000
surface acres."
Lutz said
a recent survey of recreational pond owners indicated average
yearly expenditures of $200 per acre for pond management.
"Prior
analysis of LSU AgCenter programming efforts related to recreational
ponds suggests typical savings to clientele of $50 to $300
per acre when following our management recommendations,"
Lutz said of the potential value of participating in the educational
session. "Common areas of consultation include pond design,
turbidity problems, stock management and control of nuisance
aquatic weeds."
