Indian
Creek Lake Aquatic Vegetation Control

Based off the Louisiana
Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) five-year management
plan for Indian Creek Lake released in July of 2003, LDWF
has recommended a drawdown in September for the lake.
The 1,800-acre
lake, located in Rapides Parish, has a history of problems
with hydrilla, a submerged aquatic plant. The last survey
of the lake revealed moderate to severe areas of hydrilla
infestation and the spread of hydrilla to areas of the lake
where it has not been previously located. These infestations
are restricting access to some areas of the lake and hindering
recreational opportunities.
The LDWF 2003 management
plan included a recommendation for fall/winter drawdowns for
five consecutive years to control problem aquatic vegetation.
This year LDWF recommended the lake be lowered 8 feet below
pool stage beginning Sept. 6, 2005 and ending Dec. 5, 2005.
The Rapides Parish Police Jury approved the drawdown recommendation
during their August meeting.
The gates are scheduled
to open on Sept. 6 allowing the water level to drop 3 to 5
inches per day. The scheduled gate closure date is Dec. 5,
allowing the lake to begin refilling with rainfall as available.
