Commended for their groundbreaking outreach
and educational work with underserved communities, Louisiana
Sea Grant extension agents Mark Schexnayder and Albert P.
“Rusty” Gaudé III were presented the Diversity
in Programming Award by the LSU AgCenter on Feb. 11, 2005.
Among their efforts that drew praise were programs for Vietnamese
commercial fishermen and metropolitan residents.
Partnerships between Louisiana Sea Grant Extension
and the Vietnamese community, spearheaded by Schexnayder and
Gaudé, helped bridge language and cultural barriers
and resulted in Vietnamese fishermen gaining a better understanding
of regulations, safety issues and fisheries management matters.
Through town hall-style meetings where an interpreter was
provided, Vietnamese fishermen were given a unique opportunity
to interact in their own language with officials.
The Urban Fisheries Initiative Schexnayder
and Gaudé organized resulted in restoration and enhancements
to City Park Lake in New Orleans and Lafreniere Park Lake
in Metairie. Along with improving the health of both water
bodies, the program increased urban angler access and use
and promoted better stewardship of the lakes by their users.
