Crab Trap Cleanup Continues to Clear Louisiana Waters
Posted: 3/10/04

The second designated volunteer day of the Louisiana Derelict Crab Trap
Removal Program wrapped up on March 6 with more traps on the docks. Saturday's turnout of 32 boats and 198 volunteers resulted in the collection of 1,712 abandoned crab traps. The traps were brought to four disposal sites in the official closure area which includes much of the upper Terrebonne estuary. The program officially kicked-off on February 28 and will conclude at 6:00 a.m. on March 14.

LDWF officials have been very pleased with the effort so far. Through March
6, a grand total of 6,115 traps have been brought in for disposal. Hundreds of volunteers have participated, and many institutions and organizations have provided assistance.

At the end of the winter closure on March 14, attention will be turned to a planned spring closure in western Vermillion Bay. Program organizers hope for similar success in this area, and to eventually achieve their goal of zero derelict crab traps in the water.
