2004 Louisiana Oyster Industry Convention To Look At Chinese Oyster
Posted: 8/17/04

Effects of the Chinese Oyster To Be Presented

The Louisiana Oyster Industry Convention will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2004 at the New Orleans Airport Hilton in Kenner, Louisiana. The goal of the convention is to create an open forum for education, discussion and debate on the state of the Louisiana oyster industry.

This year's key topic is the effect of Chinese oyster testing in Maryland and Virginia in order to stimulate the oyster population. Speaker Stan Allen of the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences will present this research and outline the Chinese oyster's development in "Why The Chesapeake Region Needs To Consider A Non-Native Oyster: The Current Status". Although the Gulf Region has no need to introduce a new species at this time, the potential success of this product in the mid-Atlantic could have an impact in the marketplace and the Louisiana industry.

"The Louisiana Oyster Task Force and the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board are excited to be a part of this annual event," said Mike Voisin, chairman of the Louisiana Oyster Task Force. "The Chinese oyster is only one of the many important issues affecting the industry today. We are confident that through these educational opportunities, the Louisiana oyster industry will continue to thrive."

Other featured topics include state and federal legislation, the potential impact of the invasive green mussel, the state of Louisiana's reefs and shoreline, and the applications of electrolyzed water.

Attendance at the luncheon (guest speaker - David Vitter, Louisiana 1st District, US Congress) and cocktail party are included with convention registration. Attendees will have the opportunity to try a variety of oyster dishes, and have a taste-test of the Chinese oyster grown in theChesapeake Bay as compared to locally grown oysters.

The Louisiana Oyster Industry Convention is sponsored by J & M Industries and Berry Plastics, Louisiana Sea Grant College Program, Oyster Development Fund of the Louisiana Oyster Task Force, Louisiana Oyster Dealers & Growers Association, Louisiana Farm Bureau and Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board.

Registration is $40 before August 21 and $60 on the day of the event. For more information on registration, contact John Supan by phone at (985) 787-3131 or (985) 892-7525, or by email jsupan@lsu.edu.
