Book Highlights Diversity Successes

With a goal to providing practical advice about diversity in higher education, the Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University, has published a free book that highlights examples of successful diversity programs in universities around the country. Through reports and conference converstations, Diversity That Works explores challenges and opportunities in promoting diversity in journalism and mass communication education.

Funded through a grant from the Knight Foundation, Diversity That Works contains personal reports from journalism/mass communication programs about successful efforts and the ideas and activities that made them work.

Edited by Ralph Izard, the book contains six sections that cover the major areas of diversity – “Principles” of academic diversity, “Diversifying the Faculty,” “Diversifying the Student Body,” “Teaching and Curriculum Development,” “Leadership” and “Research.” These six sections are comprised of 19 articles, including four reports on the conference conversations about faculty diversity, student diversity, leadership and teaching and curriculum. The authors of the reports, nominated by professional journalists, academic institutions and the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, represent faculty, diversity researchers and leaders in journalism and mass communication education.

Among participants were representatives of South Dakota State University, San Francisco State University, California State University-Northridge, the University of Georgia, the University of Illinois, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Pennsylvania State University, the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, Louisiana State University, Santa Clara University, Columbia University, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, Texas Christian University and the University of Missouri.

Hard copies may be obtained free of charge by contacting the editor, Ralph Izard at izard@lsu.edu.

This 175-page book is also available online in PDF format and may be downloaded at http://www.masscommunicating.lsu.edu or http://www.masscommunicating.lsu.edu/diversitythatworks.html
