Diversity That Works
explores challenges and opportunities in promoting diversity in journalism and mass communication education. Through reports and conference conversation among diversity leaders, it provides specific recommendations to encourage and achieve diversity in higher education. Most of the authors of the reports participated in a one-day conference on May 30, 2008, at the Manship School.

Edited by Ralph Izard, the book contains six sections that cover the major areas of diversity – “Principles” of academic diversity, “Diversifying the Faculty,” “Diversifying the Student Body,” “Teaching and Curriculum Development,” “Leadership” and “Research.” These six sections are comprised of 19 articles, including four reports on the conference conversations about faculty diversity, student diversity, leadership and teaching and curriculum. The authors of the reports, nominated by professional journalists, academic institutions and the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, represent faculty, diversity researchers and leaders in journalism and mass communication education.

This 175-page book also is available online in PDF format and may be downloaded at http://www.masscommunicating.lsu.edu or http://www.masscommunicating.lsu.edu/diversitythatworks.html

This project received intellectual and financial support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of the foundation’s continued effort for better journalism and mass communication education.
