Kraemer Native Jamie L. Granier Receives National Honor and Scholarship from Phi Eta Sigma

BATON ROUGE – Phi Eta Sigma, a national honor society rewarding first-collegiate-year scholarship, announced its Founders Fund Scholarship recipients, granting $295,000 in endowed scholarships or awards to outstanding members of Phi Eta Sigma for undergraduate or graduate study.

LSU Chapter of Phi Eta Sigma’s secretary and historian (2015-2017) Jamie L. Granier, a native of Kraemer, La., received the national honor of the Distinguished Member Scholarship, providing $1,000 for undergraduate study for the 2017-2018 academic year.

“Jamie is a brilliant young lady, with a passion for serving the world,” said Jacquelyn Schulz Craddock, assistant director of development and public relations of LSU University College and advisor of LSU Chapter of Phi Eta Sigma. “Jamie has made outstanding contributions to LSU, the local and global communities, not only through her engagement with Phi Eta Sigma, yet also through Global Brigades and SmileTrain.”

Granier, a senior majoring in kinesiology with a minor in biological sciences, has received numerous awards and honors for her LSU academic achievements, including multiple Dean’s List (3.5 GPA or higher) honors. Granier’s future goals include attending LSU School of Dentistry.

“I am extremely humbled to receive a Phi Eta Sigma scholarship,” said Granier. “The award will be used towards my expenses for Dental School. Throughout my undergraduate career, Phi Eta Sigma has offered me leadership as both secretary and historian, friendships with my fellow officers, and most importantly, the honor to represent the LSU Chapter nationally. I am grateful for this honor, and thank Phi Eta Sigma for this scholarship.”

In addition to her academic pursuits, Granier is actively involved in other aspects of campus life. She is a member of the Pre-Dental Society at LSU, LSU AgCenter’s 4-H program and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars at LSU.\

Granier leads many signature projects for the Pre-Dental Society, including the LSU School of Dentistry’s “Give Kids A Smile Day,” SmileTrain’s “Dental Dash” and Global Brigades missions to provide dental clinics around the world. These projects require a significant amount of strategic planning, logistics, outreach, dental service and expertise, emotional intelligence, and overall high-level of attention to detail and passion, commitment to others.

Granier’s involvement in the Global Brigades dental mission to Nicaragua was not only life-changing for her, but impactful on the 1,200 plus patients these students helped. She took into her arms, small children who never experienced the often taken for granted dental visit, and cleaning and healthcare that comes with dentistry. The small children weren’t fearful, rather they were excited to receive a visit that is incredibly special in their village.

“My heart is filled with service and optimism,” said Granier. “It’s just not about serving, it’s often about receiving. I’m leaving Nicaragua with a greater world view, and forever committed to continuing global dental clinics.”

In addition to these volunteer efforts, her leadership and service in LSU’s Chapter of Phi Eta Sigma is seen in the organized participation in Historical Cemetery Restoration Project, LSU Spring Greening Day and GEAUX BIG Baton Rouge. The Historical Cemetery Restoration Project enhances the appearance, safety, and overall atmosphere of the Old Lutheran Cemetery, honoring the history of the site and its inhabitants by means of cleanup and maintenance throughout the grounds.

In 2016, through Granier’s servant-leadership, LSU Chapter of Phi Eta Sigma members demonstrated leadership in service, strength, and community outreach as they created a Geaux BIG Baton Rouge team. The Phi Eta Sigma team served in rehabilitating the Family and Youth Service Center in East Baton Rouge, La., an organization that works with the community to provide health, education, and human services supporting children and families in their progress toward success in school. Phi Eta Sigma members completely restructured the facility grounds by extensively painting interior and exterior buildings, removing old plant growth, reconfiguring and replanting new gardens throughout the campus, and building various playground and activity structures.

Granier served on LSU University College’s Outstanding Teaching Awards Selection Committee. As a student-servant on this committee, she worked alongside LSU alumni, business leaders, CEOs, community activists, and LSU faculty to review competitive award packages for LSU.
