Katrina and Rita (2005)

In 2005 Grand Isle was hit by three hurricanes. Hurricane Cindy was a minimal storm, causing minimal damage. Katrina was a major storm when she came ashore just east of the island. Because of the counter clockwise circulation of tropical cyclones, Katrina's winds hit the island from the north, and almost everything on the northern coast was destroyed by wind driven waves. The beach houses on the southern coast fared much better. Later, Hurricane Rita also flooded the island from the south, this time causing less damage.

This photo is an arial view of Grand Isle right after Katrina. The worst damage is in a trailer park on the bottom right. The camps along the beach, which are all elevated on 8-12 foot pilings, were not as badly damaged by wave action. In fact- the camp with the red roof in the photo below is the same one on the What is a Camp? page. As you can tell from that recent photo- it survived the storm fairly well
