Medical Resources

We encourage all survivors to receive medical attention, whether or not you decide to report the assault, since you may have injuries that are not physically visible. You also may want to receive STD/STI testing and/or emergency contraception. If you are 18 or older, there is no requirement for you to report to police or receive a forensic medical exam.

For evidence collection purposes, you typically have up to 120 hours after an assault to receive a forensic medical exam at a local hospital. During that time, If you receive the exam and are unsure whether you want to proceed with reporting to police, the evidence collection kit will be stored for up to one year.

Medical Attention for Sexual Assault

The LSU Student Health Center and the Lighthouse Program offer sexual assault support/medical services. These services are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 225-578-5718.

Weekends or After Hours

If you need support services or an evidence collection kit completed after hours or on a weekend, please contact STAR (Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response) at 855-435-STAR (7872) or your local police department. An advocate from STAR will provide hospital accompaniment and support to you through the exam.

Evidence Collection

The LSU Student Health Center partners with the East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office to offer evidence collection by a specially trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). The SANE program allows survivors of sexual trauma to have a forensic exam or “sexual assault evidence collection kit” collected by a SANE. Each examiner is specially trained in collecting evidence and working with survivors of sexual assault.

To preserve evidence, avoid bathing, douching, or changing your clothes. The first 120 hours, or five days, after an assault are critical to the preservation and collection of forensic evidence.

For those seeking a forensic sexual assault exam

Survivors can go directly to an emergency room, or they can call STAR, which will help arrange accommodations and contact SANE.

Do I have to report the crime to receive services?

You are not required to report the crime in order to receive services. If you choose to report the crime to law enforcement, a report will be taken at the time of the exam.

If you are uncertain about reporting the crime, evidence can be collected and preserved for at least a year should you decide to report the crime and/or prosecute at a later date.

Do I have to report to LSU Police?

You have the option of filing a police report with LSU Police if the assault occurred on campus.

Assaults that occur off campus can be reported to the police department serving the area where the assault occurred. Even though police logs are public records, your name can be withheld to maintain your privacy.
