Math Program Description
We are pleased to offer a Certification of College Readiness in Mathematics for high school students who successfully complete our Algebra 2 pilot program. The goal of this program is to prepare students for success in future math DE courses as well as on-campus college math courses. In future years we will be adding Algebra I and Geometry courses.
LSU Class Notes and LSU Videos have been added to the existing Pre-DE Algebra 2 course. The course runs in MyMathLab and includes supplemental activities independent of MyMathLab for use in the classroom. This course is completely aligned with the Louisiana Mathematical Standards. A list of topics includes:
- Systems of Equations
- Exponents, Polynomials, and Polynomial Functions
- Rational Expressions
- Rational Exponents, Radicals, and Complex Numbers
- Quadratic and Higher Degree Equations and Functions
- Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
- Sequences and Series
- Trigonometric Functions and Identities
- Statistics
The full course profile can be accessed at Course Profiles | LSU Math.
Since the Algebra 2 course is not a dual enrollment course, high school teachers are allowed to change the order and content of the assignments, quizzes, and tests. At the conclusion of the course, we will provide a certification test in MyMathLab to be administered to the students. Students who earn 70% or higher on the certification test will earn a Certificate of College Readiness in Mathematics.
To participate in their program, a high school teacher must be LSU DE or Pre-DE certified and must be teaching at a high school that offers LSU math dual enrollment. In addition, each summer a Pre-DE workshop will be held to certify teachers to participate in the program for the coming year. At this workshop, teachers will have an opportunity to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the course content and pedagogy and to form a professional network with other teachers who participate in the program. Also, they will be given a detailed list of specific objective to be included on the certification test. There is no cost for the summer workshop, but student will need a $40 MyMathLab access code.
In future years, we intend to add similar additional resources to our Pre-DE Algebra 1 and Geometry courses.
