January 2020 Southwestern Black Student Leadership Conference, Texas A&M

SBSLC is an annual conference hosted in College Station, Texas, where black student leaders from all over come and showcase their leadership. BMLI fellows along side Black Women's 

Empowerment Intiative's e-board members experienced 3 days worth of inspirational keynote speakers, and workshop sessions regarding what it's like to be a black campus leader.

November 2012 "Top Chef" Fall Social, West Campus Apartment Activity Center

Fellows bonded in a competition to discover the BMLI Top Chef, the best spades player, and the best strategist in some traditional board games.

November 2012, Second Annual LSU Preview Day, LSU Student Union.

The LSU Preview Day is geared towards Black males grades 7th-9th in East Baton Rouge and New Orleans school districts.  The day is intended to provide young Black males with insight into college life and encourage them to attend college.

October 2012, Multicultural Student Leadership Conference, LSU Student Union

The MSLC is held annually on campus as a way for students across the state of Louisiana to present, network, and build awareness around issue facing multicultural students in America.

You never know when that next internship, co-op, or employer will ask for your resume to secure that big role.  And we want our Fellows to be ready!

This session examined the importance of personal image and important tips men should know about personal grooming, style, and making the right first impressions.

August 2012, Sneakers & Suits Gala, Camelot Club, Baton Rouge, LA.  

The Tyrus Thomas Foundation (TTF) hosted its 2nd Annual Sneakers & Suits benefit gala.  TTF serves as one of BMLI's supporters and sponsors. The event is typically aimed at supporting youth outreach, community development, and Black males.

August 2012, BMLI Brother-to-Brother Retreat, LSU Coates Hall.

Day 2 of the retreat Fellows participating in a team building activity called “Tiger Trials” Fellows were broken up into teams and had to follow connected-clues similar to the Amazing Race.  Congratulations to the following Fellows who won:  Christopher Rovaris, Jordon Bigas, Trevon Goins-Williams, and Kaderro Dixon!

February 2012, Black Masculinity in America: A Sideline Story, LSU Peabody Hall.

January 2012. Southwestern Black Student Leadership Conference, Texas A & M University, College Station, Tx. 

The BMLI Fellows took their show on the road by participating in the 24th annual Southwestern Black Student Leadership Conference in College Station, Texas. The Fellows were treated to three days worth of powerful keynote speakers and engaging sessions geared towards issues that black students may encounter while serving as campus leaders.



January 2012. LSU MLK Day of Service, Old South Baton Rouge

BMLI Fellow Trevon "Trey" Nwankwo (Sophomore) being shown some helpful gardening tips by one of the community residents. In addition to painting, volunteers also helped to revitalize one of the community gardens in Old South Baton Rouge. 

As volunteers, the BMLI Fellows spent a large part of their day serving the Old South Baton Rouge community during the LSU MLK Day of Service. The event was coordinated by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Community University Partnership, and CPEX.

November 2011. LSU Preview Day,Cotillion Ballroom, LSU Student Union.

 The LSU Preview Day gave both middle and high school black boys in the Baton Rouge community an opportunity to get a first-hand look at the university. Highlights of the day included: presentations from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions; a comprehensive tour of the campus; dialogue session with university faculty and staff; a chat with former LSU student-athlete and current NBA basketball player Tyrus Thomas; and a visit from Mike the Tiger.

August 2011. UREC Adventure Course, BMLI Brother-to-Brother Retreat "Starting Strong, Finishing First."

The Brother-to-Brother Retreat gave newly accepted and returning Fellows an opportunity to bond before the start of the new academic year. Fellows engaged in two days worth of leadership and personal development sessions.

May 2011. BMLI Recognition Ceremony, LSU Student Union.

BMLI Fellows Da'John Dickerson and Johnny Williams, Jr. honoring Dr. Mary Feduccia (Director, Career Services) for her office's support of the Fellows Program. The Recognition Ceremony serves as a end-of-the-year event recognizing second year members of the Fellows Program and newly accepted members. LSU faculty and staff members were also invited to the event.



April 2011. Trip to Northwestern Mutual of Louisiana-Baton Rouge, Northwestern Mutual Baton Rouge Facility.

BMLI Taylor James-Lightner presents Katherine Dantin (Director of Recruitment and Operations) with a small token of appreciation for coordinating their visit. The Fellows were treated to lunch and  granted a tour of the facility. They also learned about interning opportunities with Northwestern Mutual of Louisiana-Baton Rouge.

March. 2011 BMLI Stress Management Workshop, LSU Recreational Center

Ray James (BMLI Graduate Student Intern) shows off his moves on the court. The workshop turned into an intense basketball game as the Fellows decided to relieve their midterm stress on the hardwood.



March 2011. Brother-to-Brother Lecture Series: Do the Right Thing with Christopher J. Tyson, JD, LSU Student Union

Christopher J. Tyson, JD (LSU Law Center Professor) discusses the importance of making the right choices and the implications that they can have on our individual futures with the Fellows. Mr. Tyson also stressed the importance of giving back to others through mentoring.

January 2011.Young Leaders Academy: A Gathering of Men and Boys, North End Zone-Southern University's A.W. Mumford Stadium.

January 2011. LSU MLK Day of Service, Old South Baton Rouge.

BMLI Fellow A'Trey-U Jones (Sophomore) bringing more paint to the rest of the Fellows. Two homes were revitalized during the seven-hour service project.    


As volunteers, the BMLI Fellows spent a large part of their day serving the Old South Baton Rouge community during the LSU MLK Day of Service. The event was coordinated by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Community University Partnership, and CPEX.

As keynote speaker, Donald Cravins, Jr. (Staff Director and Chief Counsel, U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship) spoke candidly about his experiences of being a Black male student at LSU and the importance of initiative to the university. 


November 2010. Brother-to-Brother Lecture Series: Career Excellence with Perry Franklin, LSU Student Union.

Perry Franklin (A.P. Tureaud, Sr. Black Alumni Chapter President and CEO/President of Franklin Industries, LLC) discusses some of the challenges that he had to overcome in his life to become a successful businessman and entrepreneur. The Brother-to-Brother Lecture Series is a collection of themed conversations offered by the LSU Black Male Leadership Initiative Fellows Program that address major topics centered around Black male students in higher education.

September 2010. Academic Support Workshop: Study Better, Learn More, LSU Student Union. 

During this workshop, Diane Mohler (Center for Academic Success) talked about meta-cognition and how students can have more academic success by better understanding how they learned.

September 2010. BMLI Fellows Round-Up/Semester Planning, LSU Student Union

April 2010. Brother-to-Brother Retreat "Changing the Game: Redefining the Black Male Experience in College," 100 Black Men of Baton Rouge Facility.

BMLI Fellow Da'John Dickerson (Junior) explaining how he can take his "game" to the next level during an ice breaker activity at the first annual Brother-to-Brother Retreat. 

During this session, Kyle Boone (Graduate Student) used ballons to demonstrate how difficult it can be to have balance as a college student. The students were able to see that they were juggling far too many things in their life. 

Dr. Roland Mitchell (Assistant Professor) used this session to discuss with the Fellows how social influences can have an affect on their development as college students.


March 2010. Career Development Workshop, LSU Library

Blake Winchell (LSU Career Services) stressing the importance of networking and proper social networking etiquette at the Career Development Workshop. BMLI Fellows were also encouraged to maintain an updated resume' and a list of professional references.



March 2010. Southeastern Leadership Conference, Southeastern Louisiana University

The Fellows share a photo with keynote speaker and America's favorite principal, Dennis "Mr. Belding" Haskins, from the sitcom Saved by the Bell. The Southeastern Leadership Conference offers a day of interactive and engaging sessions on issues facing student leaders.

March 2010. Lunch with Dr. Michael Cuyjet, Castillian Room, LSU Student Union

The Fellows taking a photo with Dr. Michael Cuyjet (center), a leading scholar of Black college male research and editor of African American Males in College. Cuyjet visited the university in March and his research on the study of Black male students has guided the initial efforts of BMLI.

The Fellows also got an impromptu visit and talk from Dr. Mario Garner (LSU Alumnus). Garner talked about how things have changed since he graduated from LSU in the early 2000s and his journey to become a doctor.
