Eriobotrya japonica

Loquat

Family: Rosaceae
Zone: 8-0                                Average Size: 15’H x 12’W

Identification:

-Stiff, leathery leaf, toothed margin, glossy green above, gray-brown pubescent below, evergreen
-White flowers in terminal panicles, late autumn to early winter
-Yellow-orange fruit, 1 inch in diameter in early spring

Note:   Commonly referred to as the Japanese Plum in the lower South, the Loquat is a popular tree in the landscape for its edible fruit with a sweet plum-like flavor and its course, evergreen foliage. Because of its compact form, the Loquat is one of the few evergreen trees that can be used in small places. Like other members of the Rose Family, the Loquat is susceptible to fireblight which has significantly damaged many specimens.
