Acer buergerianum

Trident Maple

Family:  Aceraceae

Zone:  5-8                               Average Size:  20-30’H x 30-35’W

Identification: Opposite arrangement of stems and leaves; 3 lobed leaves resembling a ducks foot; often low branched and bushy unless trained to a single trunk; small samara.

Notes:  A relatively unknown maple in the south, but worth consideration.  Considered a durable street tree, specimens have been plant at the Hill Farm Teaching Facility to evaluate their adaptation to the south.  Dirr states the irregularity in form and growth rate of seedlings.  The trees planted at the Hill Farm may attest to this.

Campus Location: Hill Farm Teaching Facility, lining east side of parking lot
