Mass Rearing and Distribution of the Salvinia Weevil
LSU AgCenter
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does the LSU AgCenter have salvinia weevils for the public?
A: No. We are evaluating new rearing ponds and we do not know when we will have enough production to supply weevils to the public. At a later date the LSU AgCenter will inform the public the availability of weevils.
Q: How the LSU AgCenter will handle the production of weevils in the new ponds?
A: Once the ponds are producing the first priority will be to supply weevils to The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LADWF).
Q: After LADWF gets their weevils, what happens with the rest of the production?
A: We will be working with partner organizations for commercial scale research and outreach.
Q: Will weevils be available for the public in 2016?
A: We are unsure how much will be available from the new ponds and quantities will likely be limited in 2016. But we are trying to expand our ponds across Southern Louisiana. After that, interested parties may want to contact one of these associations who will be our partners for access to distribution: Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Louisiana Land Owners Association, Lafourche-Terrebonne Soil &Water Conservation District, Vermilion Soil and Water Conservation District, USDA-NRCS and Delta Waterfowl.
