DEPARTMENT OF
ENTOMOLOGY
How do I apply to the entomology department?
Applying to the department is quite simple. You can find more information at our How to Apply section. Application is done through the LSU Graduate school. You will need transcripts, GRE scores, TOEFL scores (if international), and three letters of recommendation. Once the material is recieved by the graduate school, it is reviewed by the Entomology Department Admissions committee. Although we adhere to the LSU graduate school deadlines for application, we ask that fall applications be submitted by January 31st in order to be considered for departmental assistantships.
What are the degree requirements?
Detailed information regarding degree requirements can be found in our handbook. Requirements differ on type of degree (MS or PHD). In general, we require 30 credits for a Master's (which includes the core courses of Taxonomy, General Entomology, Insect Physiology, and Seminar), and 54 credits for a PHD (including the core courses in Taxonomy, General Entomology, Insect Physiology, Special topics, Teaching Practicum, and Seminar)
How long does it take to get a graduate degree?
On average, it takes Master's students about 2 years to finish, and 4 years for PHD students. This is all dependent on course load, research, and other responsibilities.
What are the application deadlines?
Applications for fall should be completed by May 15th, and applications for the spring should be completed by October 15th. However, if you would like to be considered for a departmental assistantship, then fall applications should be in by January 31st. If you have not identified a potential advisor, we recommend having your applications completed before our application reviews.
Can I apply if I have not identified a potential advisor?
Yes. However, we recommend first reaching out to potential advisors for your graduate degree before applying. Those students not indicating a potential advisor in their application will be reviewed by the admissions committee. Those being accepted into the program will be designated an advisor if funding is available.
What are the requirements for submission?
We adhere to the graduate school requirements. This includes a 3.0 GPA, and minimum 297 GRE score. For international students, we also require acceptable TOEFL (79) or IELTS scores. Students not meeting these requirements may be considered for provisional acceptance, if approved by the department head.
