Software and Services

This page is a non-exhaustive list of useful or important software and digital services which will help maintain continuity of instruction when access to campus is unavailable. Some of these are general items applicable to all faculty or students, and others are specific to certain areas of the College of Music & Dramatic Arts. This page will focus on tools and communication methods; for specific resources in a particular area of study, please reference the Teaching and Tutoring Resources page.

 Campus Connectivity 

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

LSU maintains an official VPN connection which allows students and faculty to access the university network from a remote location as if you were physically on-campus. Use of the VPN is required in order to access certain resources such as Mainframe or the School of Music Production Calendar (HQ). If you have not previously set up the VPN on your device(s), you must be off-campus in order to perform the steps at the link below. 

3/17/2020: LSU ITS has implemented a new VPN program to handle increased traffic.

  • For Windows/Mac devices, please use the "GlobalProtect" instructions.
  • For Linux, iPhone/iPad, Android, and ChromeOS, please use the "Cisco AnyConnect" instructions.

Checking Office Voicemail Remotely

When off-campus:

  • Dial 225-578-5600.
  • When the system answers, press #.
  • Enter your extension. (include 8 at the start)
  • Enter your voicemail password followed by the # key.
  • Press 2 to select “Get Messages.”
  • Press 0 to listen to the first message.
  • Press *3 to delete the message or # to skip and save the message. Repeat this step until all messages have played.

NOTE: If a message is not explicitly saved, the system will delete messages after 10 days.

 Cloud Storage and File Sharing 


The Box platform is a cloud storage service which allows you to back up your documents on the cloud, as well as collaborate on files with others. All LSU faculty and student employees have a Box account tied to their myLSU credentials.

Office 365 / OneDrive

As part of their LSU email accounts, all faculty and students have access to 1TB of cloud storage through Microsoft's OneDrive for Business.

In addition to LSU email and the standard messaging features found in Moodle, some of the following services may be useful for general course instruction, lecturing, seminars, and other faculty/student interaction.

Zoom Meetings

Zoom is the primary web conferencing tool at LSU and is available to all students and faculty through their myLSU login. Up to 100 individuals can participate in a Zoom meeting. It also can be directly integrated with courses in Moodle.

Other Chat Services

The following commercial video chat services may be suitable for one-on-one or small-scale use. All of these options are free to use.

  • Google Duo 
    • Cross-compatible with Android, Apple, and regular computers.
  • Facebook Messenger
    • Cross-compatible with Android, Apple, and regular computers. Requires all parties to have a Facebook account.
  • FaceTime
    • Apple devices only.
  • Skype
    • Cross-compatible with Android, Apple, and regular computers.
      • Anecdotal feedback suggests Skype audio quality may not be ideal for music performance situations, but is still acceptable for conferencing / academic lessons.
  • Discord

 PDF Scanning and Annotation Software 

  • Genius Scan - PDF Scanner
    • Free for base version. More features available with in-app purchase.
    • Apple devices only.
  • Microsoft Office Lens
    • Free for base version. Sign-in with Microsoft Office account for additional features.
    • Apple and Android versions available.
