Night at the Museum: Louisiana State Arthropod Museum

More than 1 million arthropods (think insects, spiders) are housed in the Louisiana State Arthropod Museum on the LSU campus. Visitors to a Night at the Museum event held Sept. 19 were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum and learned about this large group of creepy crawlers.

The event, which is a series hosted by the LSU Museum of Natural Science, also included a talk by LSU AgCenter entolomologist and museum director Nathan Lord. Lord discussed the museum's history, collection and information about collecting, identifying and preserving arthropods. Graduate students in the LSU College of Agriculture's Department of Entomology set up hands-on, educational activities that included painting with live insects, learning about the life cycle of a butterfly and close up views of termite activity.

The LSU Museum of Natural Science is hosting a series of Nights at the Museum. See the schedule.
