CANS Can’t Stand
Documentary Short Screening and Activist Panel
Please join the students of Professor Jacquet’s WGS 4500 course for a viewing of the
award-winning documentary short CANS Can’t Stand, followed by a panel discussion with
activists Wendi Cooper and Milan Sherry, both featured in the film.
We'll also learn about and discuss Louisiana’s archaic Crime Against Nature by Solicitation
(CANS) law, how it terrorizes queer / trans Louisianans of color, and how a group
of trans women in New Orleans are fighting back.

Welcome
Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies is an interdisciplinary program that examines the ideological, cultural, and historical forces that have constructed and transformed gender and sexuality at the intersections of race, ethnicity, ability, class, age, and other social identity categories. Gender is a fundamental principle organizing contemporary society, and having a gender, being a gender, performing a gender, and inhabiting or exploring a sexuality are all central to who we are as human beings. As such, the study of women, gender, and sexuality is fundamental to all aspects of identity and experience. The program offers courses across a range of disciplines, periods, cultures, and texts to create a vibrant culture of intellectual exchange. Founded in 1991, we offer a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies, an undergraduate minor, and a graduate minor. We are proud to include faculty from every college at LSU, who represent over 25 departments. In the past, we have had a library which we recently donated to the Women's Center and to LSU's main library. Check out our program overview via Powerpoint! What can you do with a WGSS degree? There are many amazing things you can do with a degree in WGSS and many ways in which this degree can combine and enhance your current major (if applicable) when on the post-college job market.
