What are the prerequisites for an internship?
Candidates must possess a DVM or equivalent degree prior to their start date. Some
internships may have additional requirements, see specific program descriptions above
for more details. Employment is contingent on successful background check.
Do you accept foreign applicants for internships?
Please see the specific position listing on www.virmp.org for details. United States citizens, permanent residents, and, if accepted by the
specific position listing, those who would be eligible for a TN visa will be considered
for internship programs. Foreign employees are responsible for maintaining a valid
visa status throughout their employment.
Do you accept foreign graduates that meet your visa requirements?
LSU Vet Med accepts foreign graduates of both AVMA listed and AVMA accredited veterinary
schools as long as the visa requirements mentioned above are met. Please keep in mind
that LSU requires a credential evaluation performed by a NACES member for a DVM or equivalent degree that was earned outside of the United States.
Do interns receive any benefits?
LSU classifies interns as University employees. As such, they (and their eligible
dependents) qualify for the LSU employee benefits. LSU Vet Med also provides workers
compensation and malpractice insurance coverage. Salary is payable in monthly increments
on the last working business day of each month. Retirement contributions are withheld
from each paycheck. No social security tax is withheld. Federal and state income tax
is withheld. The University offers accrual of annual time off following either the
University accrual rate (14 hours per month with a maximum accumulation of 176 hours)
or the Civil Service Schedule rate (8 hours per month with no maximum accumulation).
Sick time off accrual is 8 hours per month.
The Zoological Medicine Intern also receives free housing (apartment) at the Greater
Baton Rouge Zoo Hospital. The intern MUST reside in the apartment at the Baton Rouge
Zoo. Keep in mind that no personal pets are allowed at the apartment.
May I schedule a visit to LSU Vet Med?
If you are interested in a particular internship and would like inquire regarding
a possible visit, please first make sure that the position is available by checking
on www.virmp.org, and then you can contact the Program Director of that position. Keep in mind that
some services cannot accommodate visitors and may only schedule a skype interview
if necessary.
