Graduate Student Health Insurance FAQ

Note: Mentions of specific plans and options listed in this document are for informational purposes only and are not formal recommendations or endorsements.

When will my current student health insurance plan terminate?

Any student who purchased the United Healthcare student health insurance through LSU during the spring 2017 semester, or the annual plan in fall of 2017, is covered through 11:59 p.m. on August 13, 2017.

Will LSU offer a student health insurance plan in 2017-18?

Yes. Details of the plan will be posted online at the Student Health Center website when it becomes available. You will also be able to find information on the provider's website. The plan is essentially the same as the 2016-17 policy with a small price increase.

How do I enroll in the LSU student health insurance plan?

Students enroll through the insurance plan through myLSU. For more information about enrolling spouses and dependents, please contact Gallagher.

When do I need to purchase new health insurance if I currently have the student health insurance?

If you are purchasing the LSU student health insurance plan for 2017-18, you can enroll through myLSU  and the policy will begin 8/14/17. If purchasing coverage elsewhere, students should plan on purchasing insurance with an effective date of August 1st.

Am I required to purchase health insurance?

International students are required to have health insurance, but domestic students are not.

Domestic students not covered by a health insurance policy may be subject to IRS (U.S. Internal Revenue Service) penalties. For additional information, see IRS information on the Affordable Care Act.

What about the Student Health Center fees I pay when I pay tuition each semester?

Students pay a Student Health Center fee each semester that allows them to visit the SHC. The SHC provides limited medical services for students without insurance. This coverage does not meet the ACA (Affordable Care Act) requirements for comprehensive health insurance.

Who should international students contact regarding proof of insurance?

International students are required to show proof of insurance to the International Services Office (ISO). Please contact them for additional information about proof of insurance and waivers.

Will anyone at LSU assist me with choosing a student health insurance plan?

As of January 14, 2016, there is a new service available to LSU students and part-time staff that are seeking health insurance. This service will be available year round if you experience a qualifying life event (such as a loss of coverage, marriage, have a child, etc.) or wish to sign up during open enrollment in fall 2017. HR’s description of the service: “If you are not eligible for employer-sponsored health coverage, you may be eligible for subsidized health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Even if your income is too high to qualify for a subsidy, you are eligible to enroll in a plan until open enrollment has ended. If you don’t have health insurance in 2016, you may face a penalty of at least $695 per adult. The Gallagher Marketplace can estimate your ACA subsidy, help you choose from hundreds of plans, and complete your enrollment in a health plan. Call 1-877-252-7040 or visit www.gohealth.com/lsu to get started.”

Who do I contact if I have additional questions?

Questions can be directed to gradhealthins@lsu.edu. Please allow 2-3 days for a response.

The Graduate Student Association usually circulates an in-depth document on health insurance at the start of the academic year to all graduate students.

Where else can I purchase health insurance?

The University does not support or solicit any specific health insurance companies. This list is not inclusive but does identify well-recognized providers. Please check their website for their current offerings. Some companies may offer more than one choice in health insurance plans so you need to select the level of coverage plan that meets your own personal needs.
