SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Program
According to the Louisiana Revised Statute 13:5713, the coroner or his designee shall examine all alleged victims of a sexually-oriented criminal offense. In May of 1974, a committee of the YWCA comprised of local community leaders organized a Stop Rape Task Force to address the increasing number of sexual assault cases in Baton Rouge. A year later, in 1975, STAR (formerly the Stop Rape Crisis Center) was established as a division of the 19th Judicial District Attorney's Office for the Parish of East Baton Rouge. Since its inception the center has provided counseling and support to survivors of sexual assault in the Baton Rouge community.
